Ties That Bind: Reconciling Discrepancies Between Categorization and Naming

چکیده
We present the results of a study designed to show that dissociations between lexical and similaritybased boundary partitions for a set of items can be produced in the laboratory. This is achieved by an incremental process of learning to assign a category label to items increasingly far removed (in similarity space) from the center of that category and approaching a different category. This process occurs in parallel with a compression effect in psychological similarity space such that increasingly distant items labeled as members of category A nonetheless come to be viewed as more similar to category B (the category to which they are in fact closer in precategory learning similarity space) than they are by people who have not learned the category distinction.

Semantic and Perceptual Representations of Color
Perceptual psychology widely operationalizes color appearance as a construct with very close, even isomorphic, ties to color naming structure. Indeed, a considerable body of psychological and psychophysics research uses naming–based tasks to derive structural properties of color appearance space. New research investigating the relations linking color similarity and color naming structures sugge...
متن کاملLinguistic diversity and the bilingual lexicon: The Belgian Story
Analogous to Malt, Sloman, Gennari, Shi and Wang (1999) we examined the relation between linguistic categorization and similarity of artifacts by Dutch-speaking and Frenchspeaking monolingual Belgians. We replicated the dissociation between naming and sorting found by Malt et al. (1999) for speakers of English, Chinese and Spanish. We also investigated the relation between the two naming patter...

OBJECTIVES To compare drugs prescribed on hospital admission with the list of drugs taken prior to admission for adult patients admitted to a cardiology unit and to identify the role of a pharmacist in identifying and resolving medication discrepancies. METHOD This study was conducted in a 300 bed university hospital in Brazil. Clinical pharmacists taking medication histories and reconciling ...
متن کاملThe Biological Basis of a Universal Constraint on Color Naming: Cone Contrasts and the Two-Way Categorization of Colors
Many studies have provided evidence for the existence of universal constraints on color categorization or naming in various languages, but the biological basis of these constraints is unknown. A recent study of the pattern of color categorization across numerous languages has suggested that these patterns tend to avoid straddling a region in color space at or near the border between the English...
متن کاملAmbiguity and synonymy effects in lexical decision, naming, and semantic categorization tasks: interactions between orthography, phonology, and semantics.
In this article, ambiguity and synonymy effects were examined in lexical decision, naming, and semantic categorization tasks. Whereas the typical ambiguity advantage was observed in lexical decision and naming, an ambiguity disadvantage was observed in semantic categorization. In addition, a synonymy effect (slower latencies for words with many synonyms than for words with few synonyms) was obs...
